May 31, 10 am: Cleanup Day at the Polish Cultural Center

The Polish Home Assn invites all members and friends of the Polish Home to participate in a cleaning party. The plan is to work from 10 am to 3 pm - a delicious lunch will be provided! Volunteers needed to clean up the parking lot, garden beds around the building as well as clean and de-clutter the inside and also to do some skilled work inside including carpentry and electrical. If you'd like to help please come with your own tools and bring a van or light truck for debris removal. Everyone is invited.

Where: at the Polish Cultural Center Dom Polski from 10 am to 3 pm but drop by when you can - every pair of hands helps! Free lunch served!

May 31, 11 am: Polish Book Club Meeting at  the Green Lake Library - Cancelled

The Polish Book Club meeting in May has been cancelled and moved to June.

May 25, 1:30 - 2:30 pm: Children's Book Club at the Polish Home Library

Please join the Children's Book Club at the first of the monthly meetings. The Club follows the Poczytajki or Story Time idea of reading interesting stories in Polish to children in a friendly and fun atmosphere. The texts will be adapted to the ages of the kids present and activities will include drawing related stories and discussing tales with school-age children. Organized by Polish Library volunteers Monika Johnson and Helena Szostkiewicz

May 25: Polish Force NW in the Ski To Sea Race

The local sports team Polish Force NW goes again to the Ski to Sea Race. The event is a relay race over 100 miles distance from Mt. Baker to Marine Park in Fairhaven (Bellingham). The relay legs are: cross country skiing, downhill skiing, running, bicycling, canoeing, mountain biking and kayaking. This year Polish Force NW led by Marek Wencel is fielding two teams stronger than last year with a goal to break into top finish spots for the race. Come to cheer the Polish iron men and women at the leg transition zones and the finish line.

 

Where: Mt. Baker to Bellingham in Whatcom county, throughout the day; check with the event site and the team when & where to show up, course map.

 May 24: EU Parliamentary Elections - In Seattle By Mail

Polish citizens abroad, as well as EU citizens permanently residing in Poland, can vote in the European Parliament elections on May 24, 2014 at the polling stations organized by the Polish consulates. The voting may be in person or by mail. There will be no polling station in Seattle. In the consular region of the Consulate General of Poland in Los Angeles, which covers western United States including state of Washington, there will be one polling station at the Consulate in Los Angeles.

 

To vote by mail, you need to register by 4:15 pm PST on May 12, 2014. For voting in person the registration deadline is May 22. There are several ways to register, the easiest should be by the internet at https://ewybory.msz.gov.pl/.

May 16 & 21: Movie Ida by P. Pawlikowski at SIFF

The Seattle International Film Festival presents the movie Ida directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. This 2013 black and white film, set in Poland in 1960s, stars Agata Trzebuchowska as the 18-year-old orphan who is about to take the final vows as a nun in a convent when she discovers her Jewish roots and Agata Kulesza as her worldly aunt on the journey of discovery. The films received many awards at international festivals. In Polish with English subtitles.

May 18, 12 noon: Opening of the St. John Paul II Library at St. Margaret's

The John Paul II Foundation invites everybody to an opening of the St. John Paul II Library at the St. Margaret's Church in Seattle. The opening and blessing of the Library will be after a mass around noon, and after the opening there will be a fundraising dinner prepared by the Foundation.

 May 18, 3 pm, till June: Polish Art Exhibition at Sebi's in Seattle

The Polish owned Sebi's presents an art exhibition New Visions by Polish Artist by several artists based in the Seattle area. The exhibition features paintings, pastels and drawings by the following artists: Teresa Bularz, Izabela Gabrielson, Agnieszka Kownacka, Liliana Krynska, Alisa Lahti, Jolanta Machewka, Cady Plewa, Kate Pawluskiewicz and Kasia Barski-Pokora. At the opening night, wine & hors d'oeuvres will make it easier to appreciate the wonderful art and to talk to the artists. The exhibit is coordinated by Izabella Chamerski. More exhibits are planned for individual artists later.

 

Where: Sebi's Bistro in Seattle; admission free; the opening is from 3 pm to 8 pm, otherwise the exhibit is available during the Bistro business hours from Mon to Sat each week.

May 15, 7 pm: Meet the Author: Eva Stachniak at Elliott Bay

The Elliott Bay Book Company presents a meet-the-author with a best selling author Eva Stachniak who will be reading from her new book Empress of the Night: A Novel of Catherine the Great. Ms. Stachniak, originally from Wroclaw and now based in Toronto, made her name with her two previous books, Necessary Lies and The Winter Palace..

 May 14-15: Polish Consul visits Seattle at the Polish Cultural Center

The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Los Angeles kindly informs that the consular visit to Seattle to process passport applications only is scheduled for May 14-15, 2014. The Consul is available from 9 am to 5 pm on both days, however, the demand is high, so reservations are required. The reservation system has changed - please read these documents to make a reservation: Consular outreach to Seattle: English version, Polish version

May 10, Noon - 5 pm: Annual Pierogi Fest at the Polish Cultural Center

All you can eat!

Polonez in action

This yearly festival supplies a great mixture of Polish food and culture. Food-wise, the main magnet is the All-You-Can-Pierogi event, which is a Polish dumplings extravaganza that serves several kinds of pierogi: meat, potato & cheese, sauerkraut & mushrooms, blueberries, plum etc. Also food booths with other favorites from potato pancakes to bigos (hunter's stew) and a beer garden.  Free attractions include: folk group performances, craft workshops (make your own pierogi!) & children activities. You can eat leisurely, listen to Polish music and have a good time. Also available: tea. coffee, soft drinks and desserts. On sale: Polish cutout art, Polish folk costumes, Polish sports scarves.

May 10, noon - 4 pm: Polish Book & CD Sale at the Polish Cultural Center

This event that is a part of the Pierogi Fest features usually a lot of new and second-hand books and albums in Polish, bi-lingual or in English on Polish topics as well as Polish CDs and DVDs - most at very affordable prices!

May 5, 9 am: Symposium on Aerospace Clusters in Poland and the US at the UW

The UW Evans School presents symposium on Aerospace Clusters and Their Contributions to Regional Economies: Lessons Learned in Aviation Valley in Poland and in Washington State Aerospace Cluster. The program includes part 1 with four presentations on the Polish cluster and part 2 with three presentations on the WA cluster. Organized by Prof. Zbigniew Bochniarz and the UW Evans School of Public Affairs.

May 4, 2:30 pm: Third of May Celebration at the Polish Cultural Center

Polish Home Association invites everybody to the 3rd of May celebration marking the anniversary of the first Polish constitution, which was enacted in 1791. The program includes a performance prepared by the Polish School in Seattle and by the Polish Choir Vivat Musica. The restaurant at the Polish Home is open from 12 pm to 4 pm.

May 3, 7 pm: Evening with Stan Borys at the Polish Cultural Center

Stan Borys

Mr. Stan Borys, the Polish rock legend, comes to Seattle with a movie, poetry, and yes, a few songs as well. The first part of the program is a documentary movie Freedom Like a Flame / Wolnosc jak plomien (58 min), dir. by Irena Sadowska, in Polish w/ English subtitles. The second part is a Q&A session with the star, which will also include a poetry recitation and some songs by Mr. Borys. The restaurant and the bar will be open from 5:30 pm.

May 1, 7 pm: Lecture by A. Taborska on Femmes Fatales at the UW

UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee presents a lecture Femmes Fatales figures in late 19th and early 20th century Western Art  by Agnieszka Taborska. Ms. Taborska is an art historian at the Rhode Island School of Design with interests in surrealism and image of women in fin de siècle art and literature, and an author of thirteen books published in several countries including Poland and the US.
