Oct 25, 12 pm: Polish Book Club Meeting at Sebi's

The book for the meeting is Bukareszt. Krew i kurz by Malgorzata Rejmer, published by Czarne in 2013. Rejmer, 29, is a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Culture of the Warsaw University. Her first book Toksymia was discussed at the club last year. She has also published poems and short stories. The book is the author's take on the contemporary capital of Romania as well as modern history of the country.

 Oct 25, 5 pm, till Nov 29: Dorota Zukowska Exhibition at Sebi's in Seattle

The Polish owned Sebi's presents an exhibition of contemporary impressionist paintings by Dorota Zukowska. This event is part of New Visions by Polish Artist series presenting local Polish artists. Ms. Zukowska grew up and studied art in Poland before moving to Seattle. The exhibition shows about 15 paintings in oil and acrylic as well as aquarelles. The artist will be present at the opening night and the exhibition will last till the end of November.

 

Where: Sebi's Bistro in Seattle; the exhibit is available during the Bistro business hours from Mon to Sat each week.

Oct 22, 7:30 pm: Lecture on the Polish Pope First Visit to Poland at the UW

James Felak

The 1979 visit of John Paul II to Poland was a watershed event both for the Polish nation and the communist regime of the time. The lecture John Paul II's pilgrimage to Poland in June 1979: How Poland's Communists Interpreted It  by Prof. James Felak examines different aspects of the visit. Dr. Felak is a professor at the UW History Department. His research focuses on Central Europe, especially Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland. Organized by UW PSEC.

Oct 19, 11 am: Commemorating the Life of St. John Paul II in Bellingham

Polish Community of Bellingham invites to a commemoration of the life and the legacy of Pope St. John Paul II. Program includes offerings of the mass at 11 am at Sacred Heart Church, followed by a reception in parish hall and a meeting of the Polish community with the Honorary Consul of Poland in Seattle, Ms. Teresa Davis. Afterwards there will be an international potluck, music, speeches and displays related to St. John Paul.

Oct 15, 8 pm: Basia Bulat & Bahamas in Concert at Columbia City Theater

Basia Bulat

Basia Bulat is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter who returns to Seattle after her successful debut at the Triple Door in 2008 and later concerts at Tractor Tavern and Barboza. The show includes songs from her album Tall Tall Shadow. The concert at Columbia City Theater is a double ticket with Bahamas.

This is the second part of Martin Scorsese's Masterpieces of Polish Cinema series. In July, the NW Film Forum and the Seattle Polish Film Festival presented the first program that included eight films. The second program also includes eight movies. All movies at the NW Film Forum on Capitol Hill in Seattle.

Note that a different series of ten masterpieces is presented in Portland, from Sep 26 to Oct 7. Please see the next note below.

Oct 5, 4 pm: The 70th Anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising at the Polish Cultural Center

The Polish Scout / ZHP Troop Kaszuby presents a remembrance program on the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, the biggest resistance operation of WWII. It lasted from Aug 1 to Oct 2, 1944 and ended with a capitulation of Polish forces and the destruction of the city. An exhibition of Polish military uniforms and other historical artifacts will be available courtesy Antek Haapasaari-Olpinski. The restaurant will be open from 1 to 4 pm, deserts & coffee will be available after the program.

The NW Film Center in Portland & the Portland Art Museum present ten movies from the Martin Scorsese's Masterpieces of Polish Cinema listed below. In Seattle, the second installment of another eight masterpieces is coming to the NW Film Forum on Oct 5 - Oct 9.

Note, two of the movies screened in Portland go beyond the combined list of sixteen films in Seattle.
