Nov 30, from 6 pm: St. Andrew's Night Party / Andrzejki at the Polish Cultural Center

 

In Polish tradition, Andrzejki (a party on St. Andrew’s night, Nov 30) was the last big party of the year, with some special customs such as divining future from pouring hot wax on water. Music by DJ Filip. Additional attraction: dances from Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa & New Zealand performed by Pacific Islander group Mama Lusi's Entertainment. Doors open at 6 pm with dinner available at the Polish Home restaurant downstairs till 10 pm, bar opens at 7:30 pm, dancing from 9 pm to 1 am.

 

Where: the Polish Cultural Center Dom Polski, tickets $15 members, $20 for non-members. Babysitting available, but only if you request it 48 hrs ahead - see contacts below.

Nov 30, from 8 pm: St. Andrew's Night Party / Andrzejki  in Tacoma

This is another Andrzejki party (a party on St. Andrew’s night, Nov 30), this one in Tacoma. Music by DJ Marek Bednarski. Party is fFrom 8 pm, with a potluck dinner.

 

Where: the Polish Parish in Tacoma, WA; tickets $20 Parish members, $25 non-members, the price includes 3 drinks.

Nov 24, 3 pm: Kaminska & Bowlby in a Bach Concert in Kirkland

Kaminska & Bowlby

Piano duo Kaminska & Bowlby presents a concert Elegance and Dance in the Music of J. S .Bach in the series Music from Afar. The concert features Ivona Kaminska (piano), Chris Bowlby (piano), Natalia Ageyeva (piano), and Miodrag Veselinovic (violin). Dr. Kaminska & Dr. Bowlby are founders of the Chopin Academy of Music and the Seattle International Piano Festival. Ms. Ageyeva is the Artistic Director at Russian Chamber Music Foundation of Seattle.

Nov 23, 11 am: Polish Book Club Meeting at  the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is Cygan to Cygan by Lidia Ostalowska, published by Wyd. Literackie in 2012, first published in 2000. Ostalowska, 59, is very accomplished reporter and documentalist, focusing on people leaving on the society margins. The book paints a portrait of Roma communities, personalities and fates across Central Eastern Europe.

Nov 15-20: Movie In the Name Of by M. Szumowska at Sandance Cinemas

Sundance Cinemas present movie In the Name Of directed by Malgoska Szumowska and starring Andrzej Chyra. Mr. Chyra, one of the best contemporary Polish actors, gives a riveting performance as a overtly successful small village priest  dealing with spiritual despair. Szumowska's previous films, 33 Scenes from Life and Elles garnered a host of international awards, this movie also received awards.

Nov 16, 6:30 pm: Salon of Poetry Evening at the Polish Cultural Center

The Salon of Poetry (Salon Poezji) in Seattle invites poetry lovers to a poetical happening Poetry brings us together. Share with others your poem or one written by your beloved poet.

Nov 15-17: Cabaret Pod Banka in Vancouver, BC

Polish Theatre in Vancouver, BC presents Kabaret Pod banka in a 20th anniversary spectacle in Polish that includes fragments from the local production of Kabaret Starszych Panow and a guest performance of Grzegorz Mostowicz-Gersz from Warsaw. Cabaret Pod banka is a very successful cabaret from Toronto. The group comes to Vancouver after their tour in Poland.

Nov 10, 2:30 pm: Poland’s Independence Day Celebration in Seattle

Poland was reborn as a country on Nov 11, 1918, when Jozef Pilsudski became the Head of State after a popular revolt liberated the Polish territories. To commemorate that event, there will be a mass for Poland at the Polish Church in Seattle at noon and a celebration at the Polish Cultural Center at 2:30 pm.  The celebration at the Polish Home includes a program prepared by the Polish Scouts troop Kaszuby and Anthony Haapasari-Olpinski. The restaurant will be open from 1 pm as usual.

 

Where: the mass at St. Margaret's Church in Seattle at noon, the celebration at the Polish Cultural Center Dom Polski at 2:30 pm, admission free.

Nov 10, 4:30 pm: Andrzej Rosiewicz in Concert at the Polish Cultural Center

Polish Home Association presents a concert in Polish by Andrzej Rosiewicz. Mr. Rosiewicz is a veteran singer and composer who was a national phenomenon in Poland in late 70s and early 80s with his witty hit songs that were frequently skewering establishment in a cabaret style. The restaurant and the bar will be open as usual for the event.

Nov 10, 3 pm: Lutoslawski Centenary Celebration in Portland

Polish Hall in Portland presents Lutoslawski Centenary Celebration. The program includes: Mourning Music for String Orchestra by Witold Lutoslawski arranged for string quartet as well as his Recitativo E Arioso and Subito, two etude-caprices by Henryk Wieniawski, and Nocturne and Tarantella by Karol Szymanowski, performed by T. Kolchanova (violin), J. Fabos (violin), A. Furtwangler (viola), E. Winemiller (cello) & L. Vozheiko-Wheaton (piano).

Nov 8, 7:15 pm: Open House & Signup at the Children Group at the Polish Cultural Center

Young Polanie - the children dance and theatre group at the Polish Cultural Center - invites children and youth from age 8 through the high school to sign up for the new season. If you like Polish folk dances & songs or theatrical performances, join the group. The Young Polanie group performs for both American and Polish audiences and at ethnic festivals.

Nov 8, 9 pm: Ashia & the Bison Rouge CD Release Show at the Columbia City Theatre

Columbia City Theatre presents Eastern Block Party featuring Ashia & the Bison Rouge with Clearly Beloved and Bucharest Drinking Team in a night of Neo-Balkan theatrical dance music, grand party and speakeasy show. This is Ashia's CD release show for her new CD Diesel vs. Lungs. Ashia  Grzesik & her Portland based group was very well received at the 2012 Polish Festival in Seattle. Ashia also performed with Cirque du Soleil and in Europe. Doors open at 8 pm, the music starts at 9 pm.

Nov 7, 7:30 pm: LXMP and Deerhoof in Concert at the Vera Project in Seattle

LXMB

LXMP is a Polish duo of two versatile musicians from Warsaw, Piotr Zabrodzki & Macio Moretti, who made a big splash at the 2012 Unsound Festival at the Lincoln Center, New York with their frenetic sound. They performed all around the world from Japan to Brazil. Their concert in Seattle with the Deerhoof group and rapper Jarv Dee is part of the west coast tour supported by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York.

Nov 6, 7:30 pm: Nicole Piasecki's Lecture at the UW

Nicole Piasecki

UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee invites everybody to a lecture Polish Heritage, Aviation Career: Building Blocks for Life  by Nicole Piasecki. Ms. Piasecki is a vice president and general manager of the Propulsion System Division of Boeing Commercial Airplanes and a daughter of the aviation pioneer and inventor Frank Piasecki.

Nov 2-3, noon - 6 pm: Fall Bazaar at the Polish Cultural Center

The annual fall bazaar features booths with Polish books and CDs, crafts, Boleslawiec pottery, Polish crystal vases & bowls, amber & silver jewelry etc. as well as booths by local Polish-American organizations. Polish Choir Vivat Musica is expected to perform. You can buy Christmas ornaments and wafers (oplatki), Polish pierogi, home made cakes and enjoy a full course dinner. Also, frozen pierogi to go. Organized by the Ladies Auxiliary.
