Apr 29, 12 noon: Lecture How Public is Our Republic (of Poland)?

The lecture How Public is Our Republic (of Poland)? is by a Ellison Center guest Lech Marcinkowski. Mr. Marcinkowski is a Hubert Humphrey Fellow from Poland at the Evans School of Public Affairs; he is Deputy Director of the Audit and Supervision Department for the Office of the Prime Minister.

Apr 26, 6 pm: Salon of Poetry  presents Beloved Love Poems at the Polish Home

The Salon of Poetry in Seattle invites to an evening of Beloved Love Poems. Come and bring your favorite love poems to share. Enjoy poetry in English, Polish and Russian (by Akhmatova and Tzvetaieva). Listen to classical music by Glinka and Rachmaninoff by singers Faina & Alex Sargent.

Apr 25, 10 am: Polish Book Club meeting at  the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is Fabryka mucholapek by Andrzej Bart published by Wyd. WAB in 2008. Fabryka ... mixes past and present in a fictitious process of M. C. Rumkowski, the controversial head of the Lodz ghetto. Andrzej Bart, who lives in Lodz, is a novelist and screenwriter whose works frequently have some unusual twists.  The book can be bought on the Internet or borrowed from Club members. Club meetings are in Polish.

Apr 25, 7 pm: Vivat Amore! - sing-along concert in Portland

Vivat Musica

Vivat Amore! is a Biesiada program presented by the Polish Choir Vivat Musica with many songs related to love and its tribulations. If you missed this great event in Seattle last year, this is your chance to listen and to sing merrily along. Also, there is a party after the show. In Polish with some songs in English.

Apr 21, 7:30 pm: Krystian Zimerman in concert at the UW Meany Hall

Krystian Zimerman

Krystian Zimerman is the most renown Polish pianist. He won the famous International Chopin Competition in Warsaw when he was only 19 (in 1975) and gives relatively few recitals every year traveling with his own piano. He returns to Seattle to play in the UW World Series at Meany Hall. As is usual for Mr. Zimerman, the program will be announced later.

Apr 19, 5 pm: Easter Egg sharing at the Polish Home

A traditional meeting of members & friends of the Polish Home with sharing of the Easter eggs and a dinner; Fr. Stanislaw Michalek, the pastor at the Polish Parish in Seattle, will be present. Organized by the Ladies Auxiliary and the Polish Home.

Apr 19, 9 pm: The Courageous heart of Irena Sendler on CBS

Oscar winner Anna Paquin plays the famous Polish WWII hero in the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie  produced by CBS. Irena Sendler ran an organization that has saved 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto. The movie directed by John Kent Harrison also stars Marcia Harden, Danuta Stenka and Maja Ostaszewska.

Apr 18-19: Exploring the Polish Soul at the Spokane Symphony

Mateusz Wolski

The Spokane Symphony invites to the concert Exploring the Polish Soul featuring two Polish composers as well as a Polish conductor and soloist. The program includes Venetian Games by Witold Lutoslawski and Violin Concerto in A Minor by Mieczyslaw Karlowicz. Directed by Michal Nestorowicz, with virtuoso violinist Mateusz Wolski.

Apr 11: Easter Food Basket blessing (Swiecone)

This is the schedule for blessing of the traditional Easter food baskets on Holy Saturday, April 11, 2009.

 

    Bellevue: St. Louise Church, at 2 pm

    Seattle:  St. Margaret’s Church, from 10 am - 3 pm

   

April 10 & 12: Polish Home closed for Easter

As is the tradition, the Polish Home is closed on Good Friday, April 10, 2009. The restaurant is also closed on Easter Sunday, April 12.

Apr 10, 6 pm - till May 16: Poznanski paintings at the Kobo Gallery in Seattle

Kazimierz Poznanski is a professor at the University of Washington, a painter with exhibit in China and Canada and an art collector with interest in Chinese art & culture. His exhibition North End Lands at the Kobo Gallery in the International District features about 15 paintings made with traditional Chinese paint on a rice paper.

 

Where: at the Kobo at Higo Gallery; admission free. The exhibition is open from April 10 till May 16, 2009.

Apr 4, noon - 7 pm: Spring Bazaar at the Polish Home

The Spring Bazaar is an annual event organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. The booths upstairs offer Polish crystal bowl and vases, amber and silver jewelry, pottery, crafts, books, Easter eggs and much more. Downstairs you can enjoy traditional Polish dishes served by the young waiters clad in Polish folk costumes. You can also buy home-made desserts and pastries. This is usually a crowded event, so come early.
 

The Bazaar looks for volunteers to help set it up on Friday April 3, 2009 from 8 pm and on Saturday morning. If you would like to help, please contact Piotr & Marija Horoszowski.

Apr 1, from 5 pm: John Paul II Memorial Room dedication at St. Margaret's

St. Margaret's Church invites to the dedication and blessing of the John Paul II Memorial Room. Solemn mass at the church at 5 pm with Archbishop Alex Brunett and  Monsignor Stefan Wylezek, the Foundation Administrator visiting from Rome. Dedication in the parish hall, directly following the mass. Reception in the parish hall at 7:00 is a chance to talk to both distinguished guests.
