Polish Film Festival Poster Competition, deadline Dec 31, 2004

2003 SPFF poster

The Seattle Polish Film Festival announced a poster competition for the 2005 PFF poster. The next edition of the Festival is in April, 2005. The competition is opened to all. The winner will receive $100 prize and a Festival pass and the winning design will be featured on the PFF poster and other Festival materials. The deadline is Dec 31, 2004; the winner will be announced by Feb 1, 2005.

Where: the entry form and other details at  Seattle Polish Film Festival, there is no fee to enter the competition.

Dec 18, 1- 3 pm: Polish Book Club meeting

The books for the next meeting scheduled for the meeting are Jasnie Panicz by Joanna Siedlecka, publ. Proszynski & S-ka, 2003, about the great writer Witold Gombrowicz, and Moj przyjaciel zdrajca by Maria Nurowska, publ. Santorski & Co, 2004, about Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski, the famous spy who reported the martial law plans against Solidarity to the CIA. Both books are available at the LEW desk at the SPL (new central library). New members can borrow the books as well; the SPL card is not required.

The screening has been cancelled and the movie will not be rescheduled any time soon as it was sold to a new distributor.

Juliusz Machulski is a Polish director known for knack for criminal comedies. His latest movie Vinci, released in 2004,  is a comedy involving a  heist of the famous painting Lady with Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci; the real painting being the biggest treasure of the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow, Poland. Organized by the Society for Arts in Seattle.

Dec 11, 2004, 3 & 8 pm: Northern Lights – carols at  Bastyr University in Bothell

This is the second concert by the highly regarded chorale ensemble Seattle Pro Musica. Dir. Karen Thomas invites to a concert of carols from countries around the Baltic and the Nordic countries. Among the 11 countries from Iceland to Lithuania, Poland will be represented by the traditional W zlobie lezy / In a manger. The matinee program is somewhat shorter.

Dec 10, 11, 12: The Woodcarvers’ Christmas in Snohomish

Sorrowful Jesus - carving by Mr. Malinowski

This play set in 1895 in Cracow, Poland, incorporates several Polish carols and authentic woodcarvings related to Christmas and Christian topics, such as the Last Supper. All the woodcarvings are work by Polish artist, Mr. Malinowski, and have been collected by Russ & Phyllis Roberts while they were working in Poland in 1997-1999. The carvings are a centerpiece and a recurring topic of the play that tells the story of love, loss, pain and healing.

Dec 10, 8 pm: Evening of Polish carols at the Polish Home

Come to sing Polish and American carols! The traditional evening of singing carols at the Polish Home shall be better than ever as both the Polish Choir and the cabaret singers from the Polish Home are going to perform and then sing along with all present. Everybody's invited, and in case you forget the words, the lyrics are supplied! Santa Claus is also expected to bring sweets and some surprises so please come and enjoy this great evening!

Dec 6, 11:30 am: Roller-skater from Poland finishes trek at Microsoft campus

After skating over 3,000 miles, Krzysztof Dzienniak will go for the last leg of his trek on Monday morning to arrive at Microsoft Redmond campus about 11 am. Please come to show him your support by rooting for him at the finish line! After greeting by Microsoft PR people he will have lunch with Polish Microsoft employees and then would tour the company. To support his goal of raising money for the two girls back in Poland, please donate money to SOS Children Villages, which is a charity with branches in USA and in Poland.

Dec 5, 5:30 pm: Meeting NY-to-Redmond roller-skater at the Polish Home

Krzysztof Dzienniak is a roller-skater from Warsaw who skates across the American continent to Redmond. He started from New York on Aug 28, 2004 and as of Dec 1 near Snoqualmie Pass on I-90. His stated goal is to meet Bill Gates to bring to his attention the situation of two girls from Poland, 7 year old Monika who was born with hydrocephalitis and 10 year old Patrycja who lost a foot in an accident. Mr. Dzienniak will talk about his great adventure and his mission.

Dec 5, 2:30 pm: St. Nicolas party for children at  the Polish Home

An event for children building on Polish traditions for St. Nicolas's Day (Dec 6). This year the main attraction is a play based on Christian Andersen’s classic tale The Little Match Girl performed by the "Mlodzi Polanie" children group from the PHA. After the play Santa Claus arrives with presents and candies for the children. The restaurant will be open from 1:30 pm till after the party.

Dec 4, 4 pm: St. Nicolas party for children in Kirkland

This is a traditional Mikolajki party organized by the Society for Polish Culture. In the program: a short performance, Santa Claus’s visit with presents, sharing of Christmas wafers, singing of Polish carols and taking pictures with Santa Claus.
