Dec 11, 2004, 3 & 8 pm: Northern Lights – carols at  Bastyr University in Bothell

This is the second concert by the highly regarded chorale ensemble Seattle Pro Musica. Dir. Karen Thomas invites to a concert of carols from countries around the Baltic and the Nordic countries. Among the 11 countries from Iceland to Lithuania, Poland will be represented by the traditional W zlobie lezy / In a manger. The matinee program is somewhat shorter.

Dec 10, 11, 12: The Woodcarvers’ Christmas in Snohomish

Sorrowful Jesus - carving by Mr. Malinowski

This play set in 1895 in Cracow, Poland, incorporates several Polish carols and authentic woodcarvings related to Christmas and Christian topics, such as the Last Supper. All the woodcarvings are work by Polish artist, Mr. Malinowski, and have been collected by Russ & Phyllis Roberts while they were working in Poland in 1997-1999. The carvings are a centerpiece and a recurring topic of the play that tells the story of love, loss, pain and healing.

Tomasz Aleksander and Marzanna Bachowska delighted us with the excellent Polna Rapsodia concert in March 2003.  The two artists combine forces in a new program Wesele Poety that joins the inspired poetry of Poland with the music composed by Mr. Aleksander. The program will include poetry of K. Baczynski, K. I. Galczynski, J. Kofta, M. Konopnicka, C. K. Norwid, A. Osiecka, M. Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, W. Szymborska and J. Twardowski From hushed whispers to boldly dramatic climaxes, from starkly elegant piano chords to flourishing virtuoso passages, this dynamic duo will take you on an unforgettable musical journey. Organized by Mr. Aleksander and the Polish Home, supported by Polish Home Foundation.

Nov 7, 3 pm: I. Kaminska & Ch. Bowlby play at Shoreline

Shoreline Community College invites to A North American Mosaic piano concert played by Ivona Kaminska-Bowlby and Christopher Bowlby. These two local pianists will perform new music written by living American and Canadian composers, including Frederic Rzewski’s North American Ballade #4, Laura’s Corigliano’s Fantasy on an Ostinato as well as two duo works, Twilight Dance by Owen Bloomfield and Rashamon by Jeff Junkinsmith. The concert is part of the 2004/5 Shoreline Piano Series benefiting the Shoreline Piano Scholarship Fund.

Oct 27, 7:30 pm: George Fiore in The Full Chopin at Town Hall in Seattle

George Fiore is Seattle Symphony’s Chorale conductor and a foremost interpreter of the music of the great Frederic. He will present a two evening celebration of Chopin works works on Oct 6 & 27. On Oct 27 the focus will be on Chopin’s influence on composers such as Wagner, Debussy and Rachmaninoff. The program includes the Ballades, Etudes, Berceuse and several songs (in English) and Mazurkas performed by Donna Cole, mezzo-soprano and Barbara Scheel, soprano.

Oct 10, 2 pm: Mark Salman in concert at Benaroya

Mark Salman

The Chopin Foundation invites to a concert by Mark Salman, a powerful, dramatic young virtuoso who is a local to Seattle Area. As a winner of the Young Musician's Award, he had his New York debut recital in 1989 in Carnegie Hall at which he gave the New York premiere of three of Liszt's works.  Since then, he has become known for his original artistry and wide repertoire,  and best known for his Beethoven sonatas. At this concert he will play Chopin. He will play an all Chopin program including Polonaise-fantasie in A flat major, Op. 61, the Mazurkas of Op. 59, the Waltz No. 1 in A flat major, Op. 34, the Ballade No. 4, Op. 52, the Nocturne No. 1 in C minor, the Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58, and of course some surprises!

Oct 8-10, 7:30 pm: Songs of Eva in Portland

This dance performance to the music of  Jack Gabel (a Portland composer) and Zygmunt Konieczny has been prepared by o Portland choreographer Agnieszka Laska. The event includes a dance piece to the music of Thomas Svoboda performed by the Portland Sobotka dance group. Ms. Laska is an innovative choreographer who created several dance performances in Portland over the last 2 1/2 years. The name of the program honors Ms. Ewa Demarczyk, the famous Polish singer known for her interpretations of songs by Konieczny.

Sep 23, 7:30 pm and 25, 8 pm:  S. Skrowaczewski conducts at the Seattle Symphony

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski

 

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski will conduct a concert that includes Elgar’s Cello Concert performed by Ralph Kirschbaum, Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod to Tristan and Isolde and Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra. Mr. Skrowaczewski is also a composer. He became famous for conducting Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in 60s & 70s. In 1998, his recording of Bruckner's Symphony no. 9 (with the Minnesota Orchestra) received the Golden Note Award for the best original recording in its category.

Sep 19, 2 pm:  Warsaw Rising 1944: concert at the Polish Home

This event organized by the Polish Home Association celebrates the heroism of the Uprising through music and poetry and consists of three parts:

  • part 1: a concert of Polish patriotic songs by the Polish Song Choir under direction of Anna Sawicki,

  • part 2: a performance We, Warsaw Children Will Fight for You, featuring poetry & songs in scenes from the Uprising by the performance group from the Polish Home in Seattle under direction of Barbara Strutynski,

  • part 3: a piano concert by Iwona Kaminska-Bowlby, the local artist we all know. Ms. Kaminska-Bowlby will play Chopin Sonata H moll op. 58 to honor the memory of her father, Jozef Kaminski ('Ziutek') who fought in the Old Town district of Warsaw

June 20, 2 pm - Anastasia Solomatina in a concert at Benaroya

Anastasia Solomatina

 

The Chopin Foundation NW invites to a concert by Anastasia Solomatina featuring works by Chopin, Debussy and Scriabin.  Ms. Solomatina is a Russian born pianist educated in Russia and the US and a winner of Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey international competition. Since moving to Seattle in 1994 she has performed as a soloist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, and the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra to rave reviews.  The program includes Chopin's Sonata Op. 58, his marvelous Ballade #4 and Nocturne in C minor, Debussy's Suite Bergamasque and his Pour le Piano, and Scriabin's Sonata #3.

June 12, 2 pm & 8 pm - Choral Music by Panufnik & Penderecki at St. Mark’s, Seattle

Roxanna Panufnik

Seattle Choral Company under artistic direction of Fred Coleman presents a concert at St. Mark’s Cathedral that includes Westminster Mass by Roxanna Panufnik and Song of the Cherubim by Krzysztof Penderecki. The Westminster Mass was commissioned for the 75th birthday anniversary of Cardinal Hume at the Westminster Cathedral. Roxanna is a daughter of Andrzej Panufnik and a famous composer in her own right.

 June 9, 7:30 pm - Tomasz Stanko at Triple Door, Seattle

Tomasz Stanko

 

Trumpet virtuoso Tomasz Stanko is one of the best Polish jazzmen around and is very famous in Europe. He played in Seattle at the 2002 Earshot Jazz Festival and was called a giant of jazz in the program! His sound evokes Miles Davis and Chet Baker and his music is lyrical and moody. Stanko also credits Krzysztof Komeda as a source of his inspiration; one example is Litania, 1997, set to Komeda's music from Rosemary's Baby by Polanski and other movies. The Triple Door’s Mainstage provides an intimate setting fitting the artist. T. Stanko also plays at Blue Monk in Portland on June 11.

May 22, 4 pm - Aleko & Eugene Onegin at Polish Home

Alexei Girsch, music director and conductor

This concert at the Polish Home will feature selected arias and scenes from two famous operas: Aleko by Sergei Rachmaninoff and  Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The Concert Opera of Seattle and music director & conductor Alexei Girsch present soprano Anna Kazakova, mezzo soprano Olga Kargopoltseva, tenor Bernie Kwiram, baritone Garry Aganesyants and bass Craig Grayson with Tina Kuratashvili on piano in this special evening. The restaurant and the bar at the Polish Home will be open from 2:30 pm to 7 pm.

May 10, 7:30 pm - Paula Braun & Letter to Warsaw at Benaroya

Music of Remembrance presents the world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri’s powerful new work ‘Letter to Warsaw,’ featuring soprano Jane Eaglen and conductor Gerard Schwarz. This 70-minute work for chamber orchestra and soprano is based on six poems by Pola Braun, an acclaimed cabaret songwriter and performer in prewar Poland. For this extraordinary work, composer Pasatieri used texts written by Braun in the Warsaw Ghetto and at the Majdanek concentration camp, where she perished.
