egg painting, where
hot wax is
drawn on an egg to create intricate patterns, the egg is then
dyed wonderfully vibrant colors...

Jewish music has staged quite a revival in Poland in recent
years. Earshot Jazz Spring Series presents a Polish group
exploring a mixture of free jazz improvisations with Hasidic
music. Shofar is a trio with the following musicians: Raphael
Roginski (guitar), Mikolaj Trzaska (sax & clarinet) and Macio
Moretti (vocals, multiple instruments). They share the stage
with Peter Knight.

Seattle-Gdynia Sister City Association presents a lecture
Polish Genealogy, Thinking Outside of the Box by Jan Lorys.
Mr. Lorys is the Director of the Polish Museum of America in
Chicago since 1996. He holds diplomas in political science and
history and has written and produced a short film on Casimir
Pulaski. The lecture will touch on wide range of facets of
Polish genealogy, from Poles in Jamestown to understanding of
how & why the town names in Poland have changed over the
centuries.

The 36th Portland International Film Festival presents a 2011 movie
80 Million / 80 millionów,
directed by Waldemar Krzystek. The film tells the story of a
famous action by the Silesian Solidarity activists to hide union
assets before the martial law in Poland in 1981. More of a heist
thriller and dark comedy than a political movie, the film is
Poland's entry to this year's Oscar's Best Foreign Language Film
category.

The book for the meeting is Mój
wiek by Aleksander Wat, published by
Universitas in 2011.
Wat
(1900-1967),
was a Polish poet, journalist, literary editor and essayist.
The book, first published in 1977, is a memoir based on a series
of Wat's conversations with Czeslaw Milosz, who also edited the
text. It has become famous for its analysis of the communist
system by one of its adherents turned victim. Club meetings are in Polish.

Foundation NW presents a concert
featuring the young artists who won a honorable mention during the
main competition at the 2013 NW Chopin Festival,
held on February 2, 2013 (see a note below). The young pianists
will perform in four age groups, from youngsters to 16-18 years
old. Note, the main winners' concert is on February 3, 2013
(see another note below). Supported by Sherman

Polish Home Association presents a program in Polish Ada to
nie wypada starring Adrianna Biedrzynska. This
is a sing-along evening featuring biesiada songs. Ms
Biedrzynska is a film and TV actress known from the series
Piosenki biesiadne (TV-2). Additional vocals and piano
accompaniment provided by her sister Joanna Biedrzynska.
The sisters
also perform in Vancouver, BC on Feb 8 and in Portland on Feb 10, 2013.

Anniversary of the January Upraising at St.
Margaret's |

The January
Upraising of 1863 was the last Polish fight for freedom
before WWI, it lasted till April 1864 when the last dictator of
the Upraising Romuald Traugutt was captured by the tsarist
Russia. To mark the anniversary there will be commemoration at
the Katyn monument at St. Margaret's church in Seattle
immediately following the 12 noon mass. Organized by Fr.
Michalek and Mr. Antoni Olpinski-Haapasaari.

The Chopin
Foundation NW presents a concert
featuring the winners of the 2013 NW Chopin Festival. As usual, the
best young artists from our state are expected to deliver great
performances of Chopin's music. The program includes winners of
the four age divisions, from youngsters to 16-18 years old and
the winner of the separate concerto competition. The
concerto winner will play with a professional string quartet. Awards and
refreshments to follow the concert. Supported by Sherman Clay,
the Polish Home Assn & Polish Home Foundation.

Council presents its
annual Chopin Festival, this year attracting 130 young pianist from across our state. The
Competition runs from 9
am to 5:30 pm in different audition rooms for different age
divisions and for the new concerto
division. The prize winners' concert is
on Feb 3; see a separate note.
Organized by
the Northwest Council of the Chopin Foundation and supported by
Sherman Clay.

at the Ethnic Celebration in Lacey, WA |

The Polish Choir Vivat Musica has been invited to perform
at the City of Lacey Ethnic Celebration. Lacey has a history of
Polish connections and is a sister city with the Polish city of
Minsk Mazowiecki; the city also maintains an active
exchange programs with Minsk. The Vivat Musica
performance will bring the Polish Choir again to the Olympia
region. Don't miss it if you live anywhere close!
