March 31, 11 am: Polish Book Club Meeting at  the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is RockMann, czyli jak nie zostałem saksofonistą by Wojciech Mann published by Wyd. Czarne in 2010. Mann, 63, is a very well known radio personality and a music critic who made his name at the liberal channel #3 of the Polish Radio where he ran his own musical programs. The book is also a story of perseverance in getting access to contemporary music from behind the Iron Curtain.

Mar 31, noon - 6 pm: Spring Bazaar at the Polish Cultural Center

The Spring Bazaar is an annual event organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. The booths upstairs offer Polish crystal bowl and vases, amber and silver jewelry, pottery, crafts, books, Easter eggs and much more. Downstairs you can enjoy traditional Polish dishes served by the young waiters clad in Polish folk costumes. You can also buy home-made desserts and pastries. This is usually a crowded event, so come early.
 

Volunteer opportunities: 1) Making pierogi in weeks before the bazaar, contact Agnieszka Szymula, 2) setting up tables on the night before & tearing it down after bazaar, contact Piotr & Marija Horoszowski, 3) Helping with the Polish Library book sale, contact Monika Oczkowska-McNeal, 4) Greeting visitors and fundraising for Polish Home downstairs, contact Krzysztof Poraj-Kuczewski

Mar 30 - Apr 5:  Movie The Christening by M. Wrona at the Northwest Film Forum

The Northwest Film Forum presents The Christening / Chrzest, a movie directed by Marcin Wrona. This 2010 story about a man moving from a provincial home town to Warsaw trying to escape his past has won awards at several film festivals. Mr. Wrona, 39, is making an international splash with his "brilliant" directing, inventive techniques and tackling of controversial subjects in interesting ways.

Mar 24, 11 am: Polish Story Time Poczytajka at the Polish Cultural Center

The Library at the Polish Cultural Center invites you to the Polish Story Time Poczytajka for the youngest members of the Polish community.  In this meeting: playing, dancing and drawing along with reading and all of it in Polish. You can also borrow Polish children books & movies for an evening reading or watching. Organized by Monika Oczkowska-McNeal and the Polish Library. More on Poczytajka here.

March 22, 9:10 pm: Movie Little Rose by Kidawa-Blonski at SJFF at Uptown

Jewish Film Festival in Seattle presents Little Rose / Różyczka by Jan Kidawa Blonski. This 2010 movie, starring Magdalena Boczarska & Robert Więckiewicz,  is a story of love and mixed loyalties set in Poland in the politically hot 1967-1968. The movie and Ms.Boczarska won Golden Lions at the Gdyna FF in 2010 and the movie is cruising international film festivals ever since.

Mar 21, 6 pm: Pisanki: Polish Easter Egg Workshop at the Polish Cultural Center

After a smashing success in 2011, this is a return of a very popular workshop on the classical art of egg painting, where designs are drawn with melted wax on a raw egg and then dyed in brilliant colors. Learn tips and techniques to complete your own pisanki right in time for Easter. Any level of experience is welcome. Eggs, patterns, supplies and dyes will be available to use. Pisanki kits will also be available to purchase for an additional fee.

 

Where: at the Polish Cultural Center; from 6 pm to 9:30 pm; $15 per person. Please note: based on the last year feedback class size will be limited to 8 people, so make your reservations early.

Mar 18, 5 pm: Music by Frederic Chopin at the Polish Cultural Center

Marzena Lilian Szlaga Piano Studio invites to a yearly piano recital celebrating music by Frederic Chopin as well as the 202nd birthday anniversary of the master. Ms. Szlaga will open the concert with the nocturne in D flat Major op 27. The program includes mazurkas, nocturnes, preludes, waltzes and a ballade by Chopin performed by the Studio students from children to teenagers and adults. Also, there will be a slide presentation Life of Chopin. The restaurant open from 1 to 4 pm.

Mar 17, 7:30 pm: Polish Cabaret To i Owo in Portland

The Polish Library Association in Portland presents the Seattle Cabaret To i Owo in a program in Polish called A może by tak jeszcze raz. This is a special program prepared under the direction of Barbara Strutynski for the 30 years anniversary of the Cabaret. Everybody is invited to a great evening!

Mar 11: Dance To The Music Films & Presentation in Portland

The Polish Library Association in Portland invites people interested in modern dance to a presentation Dance To The Music by cultural warriors Agnieszka Laska and Jack Gabel. Ms. Laska is the founder and choreographer of the Agnieszka Laska Dancers of Portland. Mr. Gabel is a composer and musician working with modern dance groups. The program includes screening of films with their work.

Mar 10, 5 pm: Polish Choir Vivat Musica! performs in Lacey, WA

The Polish Choir Vivat Musica has been invited to perform at the City of Lacey Ethnic Celebration. Lacey has a history of Polish connections and is a sister city with the Polish city of Minsk Mazowiecki; the city  also maintains an active exchange programs with Minsk. The Vivat Musica performance will bring the Polish Choir again to the Olympia region. Don't miss it if you live anywhere close!

Mar 9 - Mar 15: Oscar Nominated Movie In Darkness by A. Holland at Seven Gables

The Landmark Seven Gables Theatre presents the Oscar nominated movie In Darkness directed by Agnieszka Holland. The film tells an unusual Holocaust survival story from then Polish city of Lvov. Ms. Holland, 64, is an accomplish director and screenwriter and this was her third nomination - she was nominated for Europa, Europa (1990, screenplay) and Angry Harvest (1985, foreign language movie).

Special show on Mar 11, 8 pm: Post-screening discussion with Cecilia Benzaquen, whose parents are depicted in the movie.

March 4, 3 pm: Witold Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra at Rialto in Tacoma

Witold Lutoslawski

The Tacoma Youth Symphony Assn. presents a Carnival concert that includes: Carnival Overture by Antonin Dworzak, Concerto for Violin by Robert Hutchinson and Concerto for Orchestra by Witold Lutoslawski. Lutoslawski (1913-1994) was an internationally renown Polish composer, known for his aleatory (mornful) technique and famous for his Third Symphony.

Mar 3, 7:30 pm: Kaminska & Veselinovic play Elgar at St. Thomas Episcopal Church

Ivona Kaminska

Chopin Academy of Music presents a concert by local artists that includes: Bach's Partita in D. Major by pianist Chris Bowlby, Elgar's Sonata for Violin and Piano by pianist Ivona Kaminska and violinist Miodrag Veselinovic and Debussy's Images by pianist Armina Naghdyan. Dr. Bowlby, Dr. Kaminska and Mr. Veselinovic are on the faculty of Chopin Academy of Music in Issaquah, Ms. Naghdyan is a guest artist. The concert benefits the Seattle International Piano Festival.

Feb 29 - Mar 4: Play King Matt the First at Chutzpah! Festival  in Vancouver, BC

Canadian-Polish Society Pro Arte Popular Theatre and Chutzpah! Festival, both of Vancouver, BC invite you to a play King Matt the First / Król Maciuś I based on the novel by Janusz Korczak. This timeless children book classic has been adapted for theater and directed by Julia Wernio with music by Piotr Salaber.

 

Where: Norman Rothstein Theatre in Vancouver, BC; in English with Polish subtitles, Feb 29 & Mar 1 at 7 pm, Mar 2 at 1:30 pm, Mar 3-4 at 2 pm & 7 pm.
