Apr 30, 10 am: Free Workshop on Good Marriage Skills at  the Redmond Library

GoTherapyToday counselors Magdalena Gogolowicz and Marta Bras invite to a free 90 min. workshop on how to build a thriving marriage or a long-term committed relationship. The workshop is designed for pairs who have been in their marriage or relationship for one year or more and is limited to 20  participants. It is open to the public. The workshop is in Polish.

Apr 30, 11 am: Polish Book Club meeting at  the Green Lake Library

The book for the meeting is Oskarzona Wiera Gran by Agata Tuszynska published by Wyd. Literackie in 2010. Tuszynska, 53, is a historian of literature who has written several biographies and edited several memoires. Her book on Wiera Gran has become a subject of significant controversy. Club meetings are in Polish.

April 22 & 24: Polish Cultural Center closed for Easter

As is the tradition, the Polish Home is closed on Good Friday, April 22, 2011. The restaurant is also closed on Easter Sunday, April 24, and on Friday, April 15 as well.

This is the schedule for blessing of the traditional Easter food baskets in nearby churches on Holy Saturday, April 23, 2011.

Apr 20, 6:30 pm: Pisanki: Polish Easter Egg workshop at the Polish Cultural Center

The Polish Cultural Center presents a Pisanki workshop on the classical art of Polish Easter egg painting, where designs are drawn with melted wax on an egg and then dyed in brilliant colors. Learn tips and techniques to complete your own pisanki right in time for Easter. Eggs, supplies and dyes will be available during the class. This will be an informal gathering and any level of experience is welcome.

 

Where: at the Polish Cultural Center / Polish Home; from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm; $10 fee covers all the materials and tools for the workshop. This class replaces the monthly Wycinanki workshop.

Apr 17, 12:30 pm: Polish Story Time Poczytajki at the Polish Cultural Center

The Library at the Polish Cultural Center invites to the Polish Story Time Poczytajki for for the youngest members of the Polish community. In this meeting: playing, dancing and drawing along with reading and all of it in Polish. You can also borrow Polish children books & movies for using at home. Organized by Joanna Wroblewska and the Polish Library.

 Apr 17, 6 pm: Public Memorial Reception to Honor Mr. Tom Podl at the Polish Cultural Center

Tom Podl

       Mr. Tom Podl, a great friend of Poland, renowned Polish art collector and longtime active member of the Polish community in Seattle, died on March 23, 2011. Polish Home Association invites to a public memorial reception at the Polish Cultural Center to honor his memory and accomplishments. There will be a memorial book available to sign.

Apr 16, noon - 7 pm: Spring Bazaar at the Polish Cultural Center

The Spring Bazaar is an annual event organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. The booths upstairs offer Polish crystal bowl and vases, amber and silver jewelry, pottery, crafts, books, Easter eggs and much more. Downstairs you can enjoy traditional Polish dishes served by the young waiters clad in Polish folk costumes. You can also buy home-made desserts and pastries. This is usually a crowded event, so come early.
 

Volunteer opportunities:

1) The Bazaar needs volunteers to set up tables on Friday April 15 from 8 pm and on Saturday morning and to tear it down in the evening;  please contact Piotr & Marija Horoszowski.

2) The Polish Library looks for volunteers to run a book sale at the bazaar - please contact Monika Oczkowska-McNeal
3) Polish Home Foundation needs volunteers for greeters and PH fundraising table downstairs, please contact Krzysztof Poraj-Kuczewski

Apr 16, 7 pm: Chopin - Mortal Man, Immortal Genius at Sherman Clay

This is a special concert and book signing with pianist Fred Kronacher and Dr. Steven Lagerberg, the author of Chopin's Heart: The Quest to Identify the Mysterious Illness of the World's Most Beloved Composer. Dr. Lagerberg will speak about disputes related to Chopin's fatal illness and how it influenced Chopin's musical style. Mr. Kronacher will play selected excerpts from Chopin's works to illustrate points made in the lecture.

Apr 15, 11 am: Tea & Coffee Social Meeting at the Polish Home Library

The Polish Home Library invites everybody to a social meeting with tea & coffee at the new Library upstairs. Come join others for a lively discussion over tea and coffee. We will chat on books as well as other topics. Open to everyone, especially to older Polish community members. Organized and moderated by Monika Oczkowska-McNeal a volunteer at Polish Home Library. Apr 11, 6 pm: Night of Russian and Polish Poetry at the University Branch Library

Leszek Chudzinski

The Seattle Public Library invites to a Night of Russian and Polish Poetry at the University Branch Library. The program includes poetry by two Seattle poets, Irina Strugova and Leszek Chudzinski. Ms. Strugova will recite and sing her poetry in Russian. Mr. Chudzinski is a Polish poet who published in Poland, Japan and Canada, he will read his poetry in Polish, English and Russian. Mr. Chudzinski is the Slavic librarian at the Seattle Central Library.

Apr 10, 12 noon: Memorial Mass at St. Margaret's on the Anniversary of the Smolensk crash

President Kaczynski and the First Lady

A Memorial Mass for the President of Poland, Mr. Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynska and the members of the Polish elite who perished in the tragic plane crash in Smolensk on April 10, 2010,  will be held at the Polish Church in Seattle. After the mass, flowers will be laid at the Katyn monument next to the Church.

Apr 1, 8 & 15, 4 pm: Polish Story Time Poczytajki at the Bellevue Library

Joanna Wroblewska

This is a meeting of the Polish Story Time Poczytajki for kids - Polish children books and stories are read to kids from kindergarten and early elementary grades. In this meeting: children poems, rhymes, songs and finger plays. Organized by Joanna Wroblewska with the help of the King County Public Libraries.

Apr 3, 3 pm: Kaminska & Veselinovic play Schumann & Brahms at the Frye Art Museum

Ivona Kaminska

The Seattle International Piano Festival invites to a Schuman and Brahms concert by local artists pianist Ivona Kaminska and violinist Miodrag Veselinovic. The program includes Humoresque op. 20 by Schuman and solo works by Brahms. Both Dr. Kaminska and Mr. Veselinovic are on the faculty of the Chopin Academy of Music in Issaquah.

Apr 3, 4 pm: Music by Frederic Chopin at the Polish Cultural Center

Frederic Chopin

Marzena Lilian Szlaga Piano Studio invites to a yearly piano recital celebrating music by Frederic Chopin as well as the 201st birthday anniversary of the master. Ms. Szlaga will open the concert with Fantasie-Impromtus op.66. The program includes mazurkas, nocturnes, preludes, polonaises, waltzes and etudes by Chopin performed by the Studio students from children to teenagers and adults.
