odslonach by Jozef Szczublewski, published by WAB in 2008.
Helena Modrzejewska, known in the US as Modjeska, was the most
famous American actress of her day, in the late 19c. Jozef
Szczublewski (90), has also written biographies of writer Henryk
Sienkiewicz and theater director Juliusz Osterwa.

Everyone is
invited - individuals, families and guests - to celebrate summer
at the
yearly picnic of the Seattle-Gdynia Sister
City Association. Come to enjoy the City park on the Green Lake
while munching on roasted kielbasa and other delights.

Patricia
Leckenby invites to her photo exhibition featuring pictures from
a trip to Italy that are on display at the Madison Essential
Bakery Cafe through the end of August. Ms. Leckenby is an
amateur photographer and a member of the Seattle-Gdynia Sister
City Assn.

proclaims Gdynia Week in Seattle |

Seattle-Gdynia
Sister City Association, Washington Business Week and the City
of Gdynia organized a Business Week summer school of business
for Polish high school students in Gdynia. The program for a
hundred of students runs from Aug 15 to 22, 2009 and is
sponsored by City of Gdynia, SGSCA, WBW as well as Boeing and
Microsoft.
Appreciating
the unprecedented scale and success of this endeavor, Mayor
Nickels
proclaimed August 16-22, 2009 as Gdynia Week in Seattle.
Kudos to Mrs. Janice Jaworski of SGSCA and Mr. Stephen Hyer of
WBW for organizing this great event!

Aug 16, noon-dusk: Polish Home picnic at the
Lincoln Park |

This is the main
picnic of the summer for the Polish community of
Seattle; it is
organized by the Polish Home Association.
Come and share good food and fun! There will be grills available,
free drinks, hamburgers and hot dogs for kids and teenagers as
well as friendly games and competitions with awards. Everybody is invited.
Where: shelter #2 at the
Lincoln Park in Seattle, watch for a Polish flag and the PHA
banner; admission free, bringing your food & drink to share is
optional but welcomed

Wycinanki at Art in the Park at Arboretum |

Wycinanki is the Polish art of making fine cutouts. Alisa
Lahti shows her latest wycinanki artwork featuring
traditional motifs as well as modern interpretations. This
event includes local artists displaying work with botanical or
natural history themes and includes an optional wine and cheese
tasting for $25 (reservations required).

Aug 1-2: Pe Ell Polish Daze in the Town
of Pe Ell, WA |

This is the
second edition of a new & successful Polish Festival in Pe Ell.
Two days' program includes
NW Wings Motorcycle Drill Team, a quilt show, a street
dance with the band Sundance, booths with Polish gifts and other attractions. Author
Leo Kowalski
will be signing his
books about Polish
roots of Pe Ell. A concert on
Saturday evening features the Polish Choir Vivat Musica
from Seattle and the Polish dance group Sobotka from
Portland
and the High 5s Band from The Dalles, OR.

A video installation by two
Polish visual artists, Zofia Kulik & Przemyslaw Kwiek, a duo
known as KwieKulik, is part of the Target Practice: Painting
Under Attack 1949-1978 exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum.
The exhibition is about unconventional art forms by artists such
as Jasper Johns, Roy
Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol,
the KwieKulik installation is called Variants of Red and
Edward Gierek.

$80,000 to match for the Polish Home! |
|
The Polish Home in Seattle has
received an $80,000 grant from the City. However, it is a
matching grant and the Polish Home
needs to receive new donations before the grant can match them. $40,000 in cash
donations is needed to sign a grant contract with the City.
By August 11,
2009, over $16,000 has been raised – thank you donors!

The Polish Home asks all the
members and friends of the Polish Home to donate money to the Polish Home
Foundation before
September 15 to benefit from this very advantageous grant. If
you have not donated to the Polish Home yet, or would like to increase your
donation, please do so now! Your money would be doubled and the grant will speed
