Gottland
by Mariusz Szczygiel, published by Wyd. Czarne in 2006.
Szczygiel, 38, is a contemporary writer known mostly for his
reporting in Gazeta Wyborcza, where he is the report
editor for the weekly Duzy Formant edition. Gottland
gives a very vivid picture of the Czech society after WWII till
today. The book can be bought on the
Internet or borrowed from Club members.

June 28-30: Ewa Podles in Mahler's Third

The brilliant Polish contralto Ewa Podles returns to
Seattle only a few months after a very well
received February performance in Handel’s
Julius Caesar to sing
in Mahler's Third Symphony. Ms. Podles is a contralto with an exceptional
vocal range who performed at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala &
Covent Garden, among others.
Gerard Schwartz is conducting the concert.

Home |

DJ Filip from Portland and the Polish Choir Vivat Musica
invite to a disco evening welcoming the summer! The program
includes election of Miss and Mr. of Summer 2007, a short
performance by the Choir and a raffle for a summer picnic
basket.

June 23 & 24: Polish Consul accepts
passport applications in Seattle |

New passport regulations in Poland do not allow for
submitting applications by mail. Consul Marzena Gronostajska
comes to Seattle from L.A. to handle applications from local
Polish citizens on June 23 & 24, 2007. The passport application
forms cannot be printed from the internet, but are available
locally; the
Consulate in Los Angeles also sends forms upon request. In
Seattle, the forms can be picked up ahead of time from Mr.
Marian Strutynski at the
Polish Home on Friday nights as well as at the
Polish Church
on Sundays between the morning mass and the mass at noon.

office hours at the Polish
Home in Seattle: 9 am - 6 pm on Saturday,
June 23; 9 am - 5 pm on Sunday, June 24, 2007. Reservations
required.
Note: This event is “sold out” – there are no reservations
available anymore and the waitlist runs 25+ people. People
without reservation can be serviced only as the time permits and
after the waitlist. The Consulate is working on scheduling
another consular visit in Seattle really soon. The current plan
is to publish the date for this visit in the next week issue of
the Polish News. Please contact

shows two Polish movies this year. Several People, Little
Time (2006) is a movie about a famous Warsaw poet, writer
and dissident Miron Bialoszewski and his blind assistant (great
performance by Krystyna Janda). Directed by Andrzej Baranowski.

Kaszuby invites to a celebration of its 20th anniversary

Polish composers are the main focus
of this concert that is part of the Bridging the 48th
Parallel: Music of Central Europe festival. The program
includes Andrzej Panufnik's Autumn Music, Witold Lutoslawski's
Funeral Music and Grazyna Bacewicz's Concerto for
String Orchestra. Directed by Gerard Schwartz with
Joshua Roman on cello.
At 7 pm before the concert, B.
Jacobson will give a lecture entitled A Polish Renaissance. His
book on A. Panufnik is available for purchase throughout the
Festival.

Agata Zubel is a Polish soprano and a composer based in Wroclaw,
Poland. She sings in the concert After Bartok: What's Next
that is part of
Bridging the 48th Parallel: Music
of Central Europe festival. This evening features music by
Hungarian and Serbian composers and a new work by Agata Zubel,
Cascando. Seattle Chamber Players and Agata Zubel will be
available for a post concert discussion.

The Annual Festival at the St.
Margaret's Parish in Seattle comes in two parts: in the morning
and early afternoon there will be sales of various items,
starting from desserts like homemade cakes and pies and ending
with antiques, collectibles, painting and moer. In the evening a
pierogi dinner or barbecued kielbasa will be available. Proceeds
go to the Church restoration fund.

Music by the Polish Choir Vivat Musica under direction of
Anna Sawicki and poetry by Leszek Chudzinski fill completely one
and a half hour program that is part of the Seattle Symphony's
Bridging the 48th Parallel: Music of Central Europe
festival. Both L. Chudzinski and the Choir are very well known
to the Seattle Polish community but this is their first at
Benaroya! Please come to share the joy!
Also 1:30 - 4 pm: Wycinanki (Polish cut-out) paper crafts
and folk dancing at the Soundbridge Seattle Symphony
