Marek
Szpakiewicz, a native of
Lublin,
Poland, is an outstanding young cellist who has
several international awards to his credit, among them the 1996
Antonio
Janigro Competition in
Zabreb,
Croatia, and the Tansman
International Competition in
Lodz,
Poland. Most recently, he won the 2003
Mu Phi Epsilon cello competition, gaining
instant recognition in the
USA. He also worked on film
orchestration for
Finding Neverland,
the movie featuring the Oscar winning music by Jan A.P.
Kaczmarek. Mr.
Szpakiewicz will perform his recital in the Tacoma Philharmonic
Virtuoso Artist Discovery Series at the
University of Puget Sound
in Tacoma.

The Animation Show
2005 is an 87 min. movie program that includes 12 of the best of recent
crop of short animations. It includes two Oscar-nominated films,
Guard Dog and
When the Day Breaks.
Among other short films there is the acclaimed
Fallen Art by Tomek
Baginski, who won an Oscar for
The Cathedral in 2003.

Trumpet virtuoso
Tomasz Stanko is one of the best Polish
jazzmen around and is very famous in Europe.
He played in Seattle
in June 2004 and also at the 2002 Earshot Jazz Festival and was called a
giant of jazz in the program. His sound evokes Miles Davis and Chet
Baker and his music is lyrical and moody. Stanko
also credits Krzysztof Komeda as a source of
his inspiration; one example is
Litania, 1997, set
to Komeda's music from
Rosemary's Baby by
Polanski. Stanko also plays at Blue Monk in
Portland, OR, on March 18
and at the Norman Rothstein Theater in
Vancouver, BC,
on March 20.

42nd Spring Bazaar at the Polish Home |

The Spring Bazaar is
an annual event organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. The booths upstairs
will offer Polish crystal bowl and vases, amber and silver jewelry,
pottery, crafts, books, Easter eggs and much more. Downstairs you can
enjoy traditional Polish dishes served by the young generation of
waiters clad in Polish folk costumes. You can also buy home made
desserts and pastries. Most of the Puget
Sound area Polish organizations would have their booths or
info posted. An additional attraction is the Polish Choir singing
downstairs at 2 & 4 pm. This is usually a quite crowded event, so come
early!

Foundation started an effort to raise enough funds to build an extension
to the Polish Home with an elevator for the elderly and disabled. This
is an open meeting of fundraising committee where everybody is welcome.

Festival will be televised on Channel 21 starting on March 11th and
continuing on March 12th and then will be rebroadcast again several
times during the month. The Prizewinners’ Concert at the Polish Home was
also taped and will be broadcast at 6 pm Saturday, March 12th.

have been arranged into three programs: one for live action & animation
shorts, and two programs with documentary movies.
Poland’s entry,

and Andrzej Celinski, are included in
Documentary program #1.

for peculiar cityscapes. An exhibition of his paintings will run at the
Friedrich Gallery till May 15. The opening on Mar 11, 2005, features a
reception from 6 to 9 pm. The exhibition is organized by the Society for

and the Friedrich Gallery.

meeting of the Polish Home remodeling and renovation fundraising
committee where everybody is welcome. The Polish Home Foundation is
starting an effort to raise enough funds to make substantial
improvements to the Polish Home building in
Seattle with the goals ranging from improving the
parking lot and the ventilation system to installing an elevator for the
elderly and disabled. Please join to help in this project!
