Nov 30, 6 pm: Poetry Salon presents Herbert at the Polish Home

Angelus

The Salon of Poetry in Seattle invites to The Seventh Angel - an evening devoted to Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998) and his poems. Herbert was also an essayist espousing European cultural roots; his Barbarian in the Garden keeps infecting new readers with his admiration for the old masters. As usual, poetry reading will alternate with music; pianist Jaana Dementieva will play Chopin.

Nov 29, from 7:30 pm: St. Andrew's night  party / Andrzejki at the Polish Home

According to the old Polish tradition, Andrzejki (a party on St. Andrew’s night, Nov 30) was the last party of the year, with some special customs such as divining future from pouring hot wax on water. Music by DJ Philip; Belly dancing by Najli; Demonstration dance show by the Polish Dance Club. Cocktail hour from 7:30 pm upstairs. Dinner available downstairs (separately) from 7 to 10 pm. Dancing from 9 pm to 1 am. Dance Club at 9:15 pm, Belly dancing at 9:30 pm.

Nov 29, 10 am: Polish Book Club meeting at  the Bellevue Regional Library

The book for the meeting is Nagrobek z lastryko by Krzysztof Varga, published by Wyd. Czarne in 2007. Varga is a writer, literary critic and a journalist at the daily Gazeta Wyborcza. Nagrobek is an ironic and melancholic history of Poland from 2005 to 2071 (sic!). Club meetings are in Polish.

Nov 24, 9 pm: Movie The Rape of Europa on PBS

This two hour documentary tells the story of Nazi theft and subsequent rescue of Europe's arts treasures in World War II. Among the masterpieces featured extensively in the film is Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, stolen from the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow, Poland. The movie premieres on PBS.

Twist of fate

This is another year with two Polish film festivals in Seattle, one in the spring andother in the fall. The The Society for Arts invites to the 20th Polish Film Festival in America, playing in several cities. In Seattle, the Festival starts on November 15 at the Seattle Art Museum with the Opening Gala and with director Kasia Adamik. Organized by the Society for Arts (Chicago) and Dr. Michal Friedrich (Seattle).

Nov 15: Tom Podl honored by the Polish Film Festival in America

Tom Podl

The Society For Arts announced that Tom Podl was recognized as THE ANGEL OF POLISH FILM FESTIVAL for his initiative of starting the Polish Film Festival in Seattle in 1992. His support for the festival ensured the continuance of the event over the years.

 

The award will be presented at the Opening Gala of the 20th Polish Film Festival in America at SAM on Saturday, November 15th, 2008.

Nov 15, 6:30 pm: Celebration of the 90th Anniversary of the Polish Home

You are invited to a cocktail party! The Polish Home Association in Seattle was created in 1918 with a goal of acquiring a building for the local Polonia and running it as the Polish Home - the same one we are still using today. The program of the Celebration includes honoring people who have contributed significantly to the Polish Home, a piano concert by Marzena Szlaga, a performance by the Polish Choir, by children groups and also by the Polish Cabaret.

Several people from the Polish community were honored at the 90th Anniversary of the Polish Home Assoc.

   

     Former Presidents of the Polish Home Association

Mr. John Golubiec presented special Polish Home Association plaques to the following former presidents or their representatives: Ms. Elzbieta Filipczuk, Mr. Alexander Friedrich (received by Jerzy Friedrich), Ronald Golubiec (received by John Golubiec), Mateusz Karczewski, Elzbieta Las,  Piotr Pawluskiewicz (received by Ziomek Pawluskiewicz), Ziomek Pawluskiewicz, Janusz Pelka, Marian Strutynski (received by Adam Strutynski). Absent, but also honored by were the following former presidents: Paul Bochan, Wladyslaw Porada, Tadeusz Skrobecki and Aleksandra Zietak.

 

      Mr. Roy Koczarski, Architect

Mr. Ryszard Kott presented a special plaque from the Polish Home Foundation to Mr. Roy Koczarski for his extraordinary contributions to the Polish Home spanning from 1960s till present, especially as the Architect for the Polish Home.

Nov 9, 2:30 pm: Poland’s Independence Day celebration at the Polish Home

Poland regained its independence on Nov 11, 1918, when Jozef Pilsudski became the Head of State after a popular revolt liberated the Polish territories. The program performed by the children from the Polish School and by the Polish Scouts has been prepared by Iwona Bernacka. The restaurant is open from noon.

Nov 1-2, noon - 7 pm: Fall Bazaar at the Polish Home

Kasia Pawluskiewicz, Polish Bazaar 2004

The biggest Polish event around, the fall bazaar features booths with Polish books and CDs, crafts, pottery, crystal, amber and other merchandise as well as booths by local Polish-American organizations. You can also buy Christmas ornaments and wafers (oplatki), Polish pierogi, home made cakes and enjoy a full course dinner. Also, frozen pierogi from Chicago on sale to go. Polish Choir Vivat Musica will perform at 2 pm on Saturday. Organized by the Ladies Auxiliary.

Nov 1, 7 pm & 9:30 pm: Marcin Wasilewski Trio at Earshot at the Triple Door

Marcin Wasilewski

This year, the Earshot Jazz Festival presents again Polish Jazz by inviting Marcin Wasilewski Trio for a modern creative, post bop jazz session at the Triple Door. Partners to Mr. Wasilewski (piano) are Slawomir Kurkiewicz (bass) and Michal Miskiewicz (drums). The Trio has published several CDs, including two with Tomasz Stanko; these are available on Amazon and elsewhere on the internet.
