Apr 30, 2:30 pm: Third of May Celebration at the Polish Home

The 3rd of May celebration at the Polish Home marks the anniversary of the first Polish constitution, which was enacted on May 3, 1791. The event will be attended by Poland's Consul General from L.A., Ms. Tokarska-Biernacik. The program includes performances by Polish Scouts and students of the Polish School in Seattle, a performance Trzeci Maj wiecznie zywy by the recitation group of the Polish Home and directed by Barbara Strutynski, and songs by the Polish Choir, Vivat Musica. The restaurant and bar will be open for the occasion.

Apr 29-30: Consul K. Tokarska-Biernacik visits Seattle

Krystyna Tokarska-Biernacik

The Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Los Angeles, Ms. Krystyna Tokarska-Biernacik, comes to Seattle for a two day visit. She will attend the Opening Gala of the Seattle Polish Film Festival at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) on April 29 as well as the celebration of the Anniversary of the 3rd of May Constitution at the Polish Home on April 30, 2006. Please see a separate note about the anniversary.

Apr 29, 7 pm: UW Slavic Fest – Slavyanska Vecher at the Russian CC

The Slavic Fest ends this year at the Russian Cultural Center with the Slavyanska Vecher evening entertainment that features ensemble dances, choir music and more. A traditional dinner prepared by the Polish Ladies Auxiliary as well as bar with alcoholic beverages will be available at the site for additional purchase.

Apr 29, 1-5 pm: UW Slavic Fest – campus events at the UW

The Slavic Fest runs one day on Saturday this year. The events at the UW main campus include:

  • 1 pm, H. Cincebeaux talks about Slovak & Czech Folk Art on exhibit at the Suzzallo library (till June 30,2006)

  • 3 pm, the Folklore parade starts at the Drumhaller Fountain, this is a folk costumes galore!

  • 4 pm, Children’s Concert at the Kane Hall, several bands and ensembles, Polish Scouts will participate

The UW Slavic Fest is organized by the UW Alumni Association.

Seattle Polish Film Festival schedule for Saturday, Apr 29, 2006

14th Seattle Polish Film Festival looks even more interesting than last year: it has more movies and more guests. It runs over two extended, three-day weekends. It also has a new venue at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) in Seattle. The Festival Gala Night is on the first Saturday. The Polish Consul General in Los Angeles, Ms. Tokarska-Biernacik is an honored guest at the Gala with the Festival guests, directors Wojcieszek, Engler and Szafranski and actors Cielecka and Chyra. Dir. Piwowski will not be present due to an emergency. An additional attraction is the exhibition From Festival to Festival  viewable at MOHAI during the Festival.  The exhibition prepared by Krzysztof & Eva Poraj-Kuczewski features photos, posters and programs from the 2005 PFF in Gdynia, Poland. There is also a smaller exhibition of Polish movie posters prepared by Ryszard & Maria Kott at Jerzy’s coffee in Redmond.

April 27, 7-9 pm, till May 10: Polish movie posters at Jerzy’s Coffee in Redmond

Polish poster art is a world wide phenomenon. Jerzy & Eva Radka, owners of Jerzy’s Coffee invite to the opening night for the Polish movie poster exhibition promoting the Seattle Polish Film Festival. The exhibition features 10 posters from the poster collection of Ryszard & Maria Kott by such masters as Walkuski, Sadowski, Pagowski, Swierzy or Gorka.

Apr 26, 7:30 pm: Krystian Zimerman in recital at Benaroya

Krystian Zimerman

Krystian Zimerman is recognized as the best Polish pianist. He won the famous International Chopin Competition in Warsaw when he was only 19 (in 1975) and gives relatively few recitals every year traveling with his own piano. He returns to Seattle to play in the Distinguished Artist Recital Series at Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall. He will also give a concert at the Vancouver Recital Society in Vancouver, BC on April 27, 2006. The tickets for the Benaroya recital are still available.

Apr 23, 3 pm: Azevedo, Kaminska & Bowlby in concert in Shoreline

Ivona Kaminska

Invitation to the Dance is the last of the piano concert in the Shoreline Community College Piano Series in the 2005/2006 season with Helena Azevedo, Ivona Kaminska and Christopher Bowlby. Their program celebrates the dance music from 18 c. to contemporary rhythms of South America and includes a Polonez by Chopin, an Oberek by Szymanowski, and Krakowiak Fantastyczny by Paderewski. The concert benefits the Shoreline Piano Scholarship Fund.

Apr 22, from 5 pm: Polish Studies Spring Auction at the Polish Home

This is the second auction organized by the UW Polish Studies Endowment Committee for the benefit of the Polish Studies Endowment Fund, as well as related scholarship and lecture funds. The organizers want to beat the last year’s great success when more than $32,000 had been raised for the Fund and additional $7,000 for scholarships. The event starts with a silent auction and a complimentary wine from 5 pm, followed by a dinner and live auction. There will be plenty of Polish food to enjoy and interesting items to bid.

April 22, 2 pm: Oskar by Piwowski at the Central Library

Marek Piwowski is the famous director of the cult movie The Cruise / Rejs (1970). He is coming to Seattle in person on April 29 for the Opening Gala of the Seattle Polish Film Festival, where both The Cruise and Oskar will be shown. The Cruise screens on April 30 and the director will attend the Q&A at the screening of Oskar on April 29; if you cannot go then, it’s worth attending the prescreening at the Seattle Central Library.

Ivona Kaminska

Known local pianists Ivona Kaminska and Christopher Bowlby will perform their Invitation to the Dance program from the Shoreline series (cf. note at Apr. 23, 2006) at a concert at Sherman Clay. The program celebrates the dance music from 18 c. to modern times and includes among others a Polonez by Chopin, an Oberek by Szymanowski, and Krakowiak Fantastyczny by Paderewski.

April 8, noon – 7 pm: 44th Spring Bazaar at the Polish Home

The Spring Bazaar is an annual event organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. The booths upstairs offer Polish crystal bowl and vases, amber and silver jewelry, pottery, crafts, books, Easter eggs and much more. Downstairs you can enjoy traditional Polish dishes served by the young generation of waiters clad in Polish folk costumes. You can also buy home made desserts and pastries. Most of the Puget Sound area Polish organizations would have their booths or info posted. This is usually a quite crowded event, so come early!

April 2, 1 pm: T. Weber on the Lodz Ghetto photographs at the Frye Museum

Thomas Weber

Dr. Thomas Weber is a historian who edited a new album with a selection of photographs from the famous Henryk Ross Collection. Henryk Ross was a professional photographer who documented all aspects of life in the Jewish ghetto in Lodz, Poland, under the Nazi rule from 1940-44. Both Ross and his photographs survived WWII. In his lecture Dr. Weber will talk about the photographer as well as death and survival in the Lodz ghetto.

Apr 2, from noon: Commemorative mass & Witness to Hope at St. Margaret’s

April 2, 2006, is the first anniversary of death of Pope John Paul II. The Polish Parish in Seattle invites to a commemorative mass for the late Pope at noon, and afterwards, that is about 1:30 pm,  to a screening of the movie Witness to Hope at the Parish Hall.

Apr 1 & 2: Last Days of John Paul II on CNN

On the anniversary of Pope’s death, the CNN Presents series airs a special about John Paul II prepared by the CNN faith and values correspondent Delia Gallagher. In the program, Vatican insiders close to the late Pope reflect on the last days of the Pontiff, the papacy and the conclave.

Alexander Ardakov

 

Alexander Ardakov is a very accomplished pianist and a professor at the Trinity College of Music in London, England; he performed at such places as Carnegie Hall, New York and Bosendorfer Hall in Vienna, Austria and Wroclaw, Poland. His concert features works by Bach-Busoni, Glinka and Mussorgsky (Pictures at the Exhibition) in the first part, and of Rachmaninov, Chopin (two nocturnes and the Ballade in G-Major) and Liszt in the second part.

Apr 1, 11 am, Polish Book Club meeting in Redmond

The book for the meeting is Dwukropek by Wislawa Szymborska, published by a5 in 2005. Szymborska is the famous poet and essayist who received the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature. Dwukropek is her first book of poems in three years. The book is available in Polish, earlier poems are available in English; please see the Club website for more info. New members and guests are always welcome, whether they have read the book or not!
